⨠The Dream That Never Really Left
When I was five years old, I wanted to run a farm.
Not just play pretendāI really wanted it.
But someone I loved dearly, my grandmother, spoke what she believed was truth⦠and it completely shut that dream down. For years, I didnāt even consider it possible.
Until life had other plans.
.
š It Started With Three Chickens⦠and a Lot of Doubt
Fast forward almost four years ago.
My husband got tired of buying eggs. Just like thatāhe brought home three live chickens.
No big plan. No experience. No idea what we were doing.
And we didnāt start on landā¦
We started right in the middle of the city.
People had opinions.
āThey really think theyāre just going to wake up and be farmers?ā
Let me say this clearly:
Weāre not farmers. Weāre homesteaders. And there is a difference.
We werenāt trying to build a business overnight.
We were trying to build a life.
And honestly? Weāre not great at caring about other peopleās opinions anyway.
š The Part Nobody Talks About
It did not come naturally.
At first, it felt like a lot of work with no return.
No extra food.
No savings.
Just time, effort⦠and figuring things out the hard way.
Our biggest early mistake?
We didnāt keep our chicken run cool enough.
Chickens donāt sweat. When their feet get too hot, they can overheat fastāand we learned that the hard way.
Thatās the side of homesteading people donāt show you.
But if you stick with it⦠something shifts.
š” What Our āCity Homesteadā Looks Like Now
Today?
We have:
- Chickens š
- Rabbits š
- Ducks š¦
- A growing garden š±
All⦠in the city.
No perfect setup. No huge acreage.
Just consistency, learning, and not quitting.
ā¤ļø Hereās What I Need You to Hear
If youāre sitting there thinking:
āI canāt homestead because I live in the cityā¦ā
You absolutely can.
You donāt need land.
You donāt need perfection.
You donāt need approval.
You just need to start.
šæ How to Start Homesteading (Even in the City)
1. Start SMALL (Seriously, smaller than you think)
Donāt go all in at once.
Start with:
Even one simple skill like baking bread
Build confidence first.
2. Check Your City Ordinances
Before animalsāalways check your local rules.
Know:
- How many animals you can have
- What types are allowed
- Space requirements
This saves you a lot of stress later.
3. Expect Mistakes (Theyāre Part of It)
You will mess up.
We did.
Youāll learn faster by doing than by waiting until you āknow everything.ā
4. Stop Listening to Everyone Else
People will doubt you.
Theyāll question you.
Theyāll make comments.
Let them.
This isnāt their lifeāitās yours.
5. Remember WHY Youāre Doing This
Food is getting:
- More expensive
- More processed
- More questionable
There is something powerful about going back to a life where:
Hard work actually feeds your family.
ā³ This Takes Time (And Thatās Okay)
A homestead is not built overnight.
It takes years.
But every small step builds something real.
Something stable.
Something yours.
š¾ Final Thoughts: You Can Do This
We didnāt grow up knowing how to do this.
We didnāt have land.
We didnāt have support from everyone.
But we started anyway.
And thatās what changed everything.
⨠Start where you are. Use what you have. Ignore the noise.
Because the truth isā¦
You donāt need a farm to start a homestead.
